Cheeky does not mean Naughty

Okay, I know I’m pretty cheeky – ask anyone – but I have to admit that I’ve been more than cheeky this weekend; I’ve been kind of naughty. And cheeky does not mean the same thing as naughty.

Cheeky is trying to get a bite of the plants in the planter when Mommy’s back is turned, and accidentally pulling the whole plant out. And then dropping it and looking away, like, “It wasn’t me.”

That's cheeky.

That’s cheeky.

Of course, Daddy put the plants back, and as much of the soil as he could fit back into the planter. (Daddy, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry for the mess!)

Do you know what else is cheeky? Cheeky is getting to go into a dry paddock for the first time, as I told you before… and finding a way to let myself out!  (…and then proceeding to go on a joy-gallop around the property until Bruce’s Mommy, Marlena, caught me and brought me back in to my own stall!)

Cheeky is also saying hi to Bruce, and then taking a big ol’ drink of his water before walking away!

Thanks, Bruce! I appreciate it!

Thanks, Bruce! I appreciate it!

Daddy filled his water back up, though. (Thanks, Daddy… I don’t know what I’d do without you!)

Naughty, however… Naughty is getting upset because I bumped my head; rearing up, spinning around, kicking out like a Fancy Lippizaner Horse… and accidentally kicking Daddy in the hand. (Daddy… I’m so, so sorry. I promise I’ll never do it again!)

Naughty is also bucking and bucking and rearing and bucking when Mommy tried to have a nice, calm, quiet ride in the dressage arena yesterday.

I promise, I'll be a good boy from now on...

I promise, I’ll be a good boy from now on…

Cheeky is chasing Lily around in the arena, because she didn’t believe my Daddy that I actually would! I like Lily, though. She and her pony, Rocky, are my friends. (Remember Rocky?)

Trotting after Lily!

Trotting after Lily!

Naughty, though… Naughty is bucking Mommy clear out of the saddle on my first day back to jumping in over two months! She said that she got a couple little cuts on her face, a scrape on her elbow… and dirt in her braces!

YEEEE-HAAAW!

YEEEE-HAAAW!

(Mommy, if you’re reading this – and I know you are – I’m sorry I threw you off into the dirt today. I really didn’t mean to… I sort of thought that you just never fell off. Especially because I tried really hard to get you off my back yesterday, as I’m sure you’re aware… and you stuck like glue. Until I knocked the wind out of you, and you jumped off and grew to be, like, ten feet tall and really scary. But anyway, Mommy, I hope you’re not hurting or sore, because I know I sure am!)

I went for a long gallop around the arena when Mommy fell off, and I probably shouldn’t have, because then Mommy got back on and schooled me into the ground. I was exhausted… but not too exhausted to keep acting cheeky! I couldn’t help it; I was just too excited to be jumping again, after all this time!

We worked through it, though, and there came a point when I had to give in. I just didn’t have the energy to “keep up with the cheek,” as Mommy says.

That's what we're talking about, right Mommy?

That’s what we’re talking about, right Mommy?

My Uncle Jody and his daughter, Skylar, showed up at the barn to watch me jump a little, too.

Uncle Jody and Skylar got the best seats in the house!

Uncle Jody and Skylar got the best seats in the house!

And then, Mommy and I cantered into (and out of) a five-stride line beautifully; the best we did all day! Granted, it was only about 2’3… but hey, we have to start somewhere, right? It’s been two months! And even before I landed, Mommy was already crying out, “ATTABOY, ICCHY!” It felt great to hear some real praise! (I guess maybe I should behave more often, huh?)

We are definitely back!

We are definitely back!

Well, anyway, I got a long shower and a liniment bath after my hard workout, and although I usually hate cold showers and liniment, it felt great today. I was hot and exhausted!

Chillin' in the wash-rack!

Chillin’ in the wash-rack!

Skylar helped Mommy to hose me down… and then, since we were the only ones up at the barn, Mommy and Skylar started spraying each other with the hose, too! They were giggling and it sounded like they enjoyed it. They just stood there, spraying each other! I rolled my eyes and sighed, because they’re crazy. Skylar even said, “I can’t understand why you don’t like this, Icchy – it’s so much fun!”

I just stood there and napped in the cross ties while they had their fill; I mean, like I said – it was really, really hot today. And after such a long, hard workout, the cold water did feel good…

Anyway, I got to go outside again today, for the rest of the afternoon… but I didn’t escape this time. I knew better. I could hear my Mommy’s voice in my head saying, “Enough with the cheek, Icchy… I’m serious!”

And when Mommy and Daddy came back in the evening, they wrapped all of my legs in pillow wraps so that I’d feel less sore tonight. And I have to say, it really helps. Because I worked hard today. While Mommy wrapped my legs, my best friend in the whole wide world, Rocky the Kitty, hung out with me and checked out the beautiful scenery.

That's Rocky the Kitty, my best friend.

That’s Rocky the Kitty, my best friend.

Rocky the Kitty is awesome. He follows me around and we just chill, wherever we go. He likes to lounge around in trees sometimes, but tonight he just stuck by my side.

Chillin'!

Chillin’!

After my legs were wrapped and Daddy fluffed up the bedding in my stall, I got to go home and eat my hay.

That's my lucky blue wrap.

That’s my lucky blue wrap.

And now, I think I’m going to sleep. It’s nice, falling asleep to the sound of the rain. I’m pretty sure I get the day off tomorrow, too, so maybe I’ll sleep in for once…

Have a great Monday, friends! Catch y’all later!

Withering away…

Friends, I’m sorry that I haven’t written in such a long time. The truth is, I’ve been too upset to write… because I feel like I have nothing to write about! I’m still lame, and being lame is still lame.

I’m disappointed and frustrated that my hoof is taking so long to heal, because every other part of me feels just fine. I have a ton of energy, and I know Mommy wants to work as badly as I do!

"Come on, Mommy! Let's get back to work, already!"

“Come on, Mommy! Let’s get back to work, already!”

I’m glad that I still get to go outside with my friends at night. That’s really what has been saving me from insanity. I get to stretch, I get to socialize, and now and again I even get the other horses to run around with me! But, um, don’t tell my Mommy about that last part…

Chilling with my friend, Bruce

Tonight, though, I have to stay inside. You see, last night (and all day today) it rained pretty hard – and non-stop, too – so Mommy and Daddy didn’t want me out there in the mud. Which was probably a wise choice on their part, especially considering that they know how much I love to be covered in mud!

This is what I looked like this morning when I came in from the paddock. Mommy had to give me a shower while it was pouring down rain!

Yes, I sure do love my life...

Yes, I sure do love my life…

For once, I really liked having a shower, though I would have liked it if Mommy had just left me muddy. I mean, I worked hard to cover every inch of myself!

Anyway, I had to stay in my stall all day today, and I’m in all night, too. I’ll probably have to stay in tomorrow as well, since it’s supposed to rain for a couple more days. At this rate, I feel like I’ll never get back to work! I know, I know; I just have to be patient. It’ll be here sooner than I realize. It’s just that it’s been so long, and I’m so ready to get back to work!

Well, I hope that y’all have had a nice Fourth of July, friends, and that the fireworks didn’t rattle your nerves too badly. Just try to remember that they’re far away, and they can’t harm you from where they are. Unless your humans are lighting them off in the barn – in which case, RUN! And call me immediately!

Alright, friends. I guess I’ll catch y’all later!

The waiting is the hardest part…

Okay, I have a confession to make. I was kind of… awful… today. Not that I was trying to be naughty; I just had a lot of energy. My humans didn’t blame me or anything, but when they turned me out in the round pen, I just went nuts!

Woo hoo! I feel great!

Woo hoo! I feel great!

Mommy wouldn’t stay in the round pen with me, because I was out of control! Running and bucking and having a really good time.

You see, I got out yesterday in the middle of the day, and then I was in my stall the rest of the day… all night… and all today, too. I mean, okay, my Mommy and Daddy did come twice each day to get me out and hand-walk me. But that’s not enough exercise! So that’s why I had so much energy when they let me go into the round pen today to play.

I did make sure to let Daddy and Mommy know how much better I feel. I mean, the only reason I still have a little hitch in my giddy-up is because I don’t have a shoe on!

Hanging out with my Daddy.

Hanging out with my Daddy.

Apparently, though, my friend – John the Farrier – will be there tomorrow afternoon to put my shoe back on! I’ll still have to stay in my stall for one more day after that, but if I’m not sore by the next day, I get to go out at night with my friends!

I have a new friend, too. A horse named Bruce will be joining our herd! He looks a lot like my friend Troy, but he’s somewhat bigger. He has more brown in his hair, whereas Troy’s hair has silver in it.

I got to meet him tonight, even though I didn’t get to go and hang out with him.

Hi, Bruce! I'm Icchy!

Hi, Bruce! I’m Icchy!

Anyway, on the walk back to the barn – and while Mommy and Daddy were giving me a shower – I just couldn’t get myself to behave. I was antsy and jumpy and I wanted to go back out and run again!

When all was said and done, though, I was happy to have had a shower. I got a new bandage on my foot, and then I got to go back to my clean stall with lots of hay and fresh water – enough to last me through the night. I’ll try to be better tomorrow, because I’m almost back to work!

Catch y’all later…

Jumping days and sleeping under the stars

Friends, I’m sorry that I haven’t written in such a long time… I can’t believe it’s already been three days! A lot has happened in the past three days, although I know that’s no excuse to abandon y’all. I’ll try to recapture everything that has happened, so you don’t feel like you’ve missed anything…

Monday was a rainy, dreary day, just as the day before it had been. Mommy and Daddy came to visit me in the morning, and we all crossed our hooves (or, in their case, they crossed their fingers) that the rain would stop long enough for us to get in a good workout! Even a quick workout would be nice; I just needed to get out my energy!

Well, sure enough, the rain died down to a soft drizzle, and my Mommy decided that we should get out there and at least stretch our legs. But we were afraid that we might get caught in a downpour, and she didn’t want to risk getting our saddle soaked… so she put on my bridle and hopped on me, bareback!

Walking down to the arena with Mommy.

We went down to the jumping arena to see how the footing was, and we weren’t surprised to find that it was wet. We were surprised, however, to find that it wasn’t very slippery, even though it had been raining for the past few days! So, after we walked around for a while, Mommy and I trotted and cantered a little bit. Not much… just a little bit. We even worked on some shoulder-in and haunches-in exercises at the trot, and Mommy told me I was brilliant!

Practicing our dressage in the rain!

After a little while, we decided to walk up the hill and see how the footing was in dressage arena. Again… it was perfectly fine, even though it was wet. It felt pretty cool to be able to ride in two different arenas – even in the rain!

We worked on a few flying lead changes in the dressage arena, and again, Mommy said I did brilliantly. I didn’t even mind that it was drizzling, because Mommy and I were having so much fun!

We didn’t work for very long; I didn’t mind that we had a short, easy workout, because I was happy that I got to stretch my legs and get out some of my energy.

Mommy and Daddy groomed on me and made sure I was cozy and dry, and then they said goodbye… but they came back later in the evening to check on me! I was outside in my paddock, grazing with my friends, when they came back; Daddy told me that they wanted to make sure I was alright outside, since it was still raining on and off. Of course, I told them that they were embarrassing me with all of their fussing, and that I was fine. I just wanted to hang out with my friends, William and Zii!

Guys, come on... You're embarrassing me!

Guys, come on… You’re embarrassing me!

Then again, I secretly loved all of the attention they were giving me, but I couldn’t tell them that – not in front of my friends!

Anyway, the next day, Mommy told me that it was jumping day! I was excited, and I wanted to make sure that I was on my best behavior. First, we worked on jumping a whole course. I have to admit, I got a little bit cheeky… I mean, it’s not that I was bad or anything; I was just excited, so I got a little quick now and then. You know, pulling at the reins and whatnot. So, Mommy made me work on collecting and staying slow over the jumps, and then she asked me to do a couple rollbacks from one jump to another, at a collected canter – that was Daddy’s idea – and I did it perfectly. After that, we worked on an exercise that was really fun, but really tough! We did a bounce (two jumps without a stride in between) to a one stride, with an oxer at the end.

I know, I know… what’s so tough about that? Well, every time I jumped it successfully, my Daddy would spread the oxer wider and wider, until we jumped it with a five foot spread! Of course, it wasn’t the first time I’d jumped an oxer with that wide of a spread, and it certainly wasn’t the highest oxer with a five-foot-spread that I’d jumped (because I’ve jumped an oxer set at 4’2 with a five foot spread before)… but it was a lot of fun, and you know how much I love a challenge!

Jumping an oxer with a five foot spread! We're flying!!

Jumping an oxer with a five foot spread! We’re flying!!

To my very happy surprise, I actually got to spend the entire rest of the day and the entire night outside in the paddock with my friends! Though, I was sad to find that Zii had moved on to a different paddock… but I did make a new friend named Troy! He and William and I hung out all day and all night, just eating grass and getting to know one another!

Today, I got an extra special reward for having done such a great job yesterday: my Daddy rode me!

Just the boys today!

Just the boys today!

We had a really good, light workout, and he even jumped me over a couple small jumps. We didn’t do anything serious, of course; Mommy only let us jump a little bit since we didn’t jump very big yesterday, and she made sure we didn’t jump too many times today, either. We just jumped through the bounce-to-the-one-stride-line a couple times. Oh, but don’t worry; the last jump was no longer set at a five-foot spread. It was just a small, simple vertical. We did a great job; Daddy and I always do well together!

Exercising with my Daddy!

I got to have a shower and lots of treats when I was done with my workout, and then I got to relax inside my stall. I really didn’t mind being inside for the rest of the day; it was pretty hot out today, and my stall was nice and cool. Plus, I was very tired, and took the opportunity to have a much needed nap!

It’s a beautiful night though; I’m happy to be outside again, getting ready to sleep under the stars with my two friends, William and Troy. I’ll get to have tomorrow off, since I’ve worked more than my allowed number of days in a row. I don’t mind, though, because I had a ton of pent up energy from the move and all that, so I really did need to get it all out. Now I’m as happy as can be, with my new friends and my new routine. I love my new home; I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

For the immediate future, though, I can tell you with a great deal of certainty that it holds a long, peaceful sleep! Catch y’all later…

And I thought YESTERDAY was wet…

The paddocks may have been wet yesterday, but that was NOTHING compared to how they were today! It rained all night and all morning; I’ve never seen so much water in one place before! I was actually very glad to stay in my stall today, even though I still have a ton of energy. The humans were all talking about the possibility of a flood. I don’t know exactly what that means, but it sure doesn’t sound good!

My Mommy and Daddy showed up early in the morning while it was still drizzling. Daddy cleaned my stall while my Mommy groomed me and put on my bridle, and then she and I went for another bareback walk in the rain. I was a little jumpy because of how much energy I had and, at one point, Daddy had to walk next to me to keep me calm so I didn’t slip or anything while Mommy was on my back.

We stopped along the way and looked at my favorite paddock, and I realized that the puddle from yesterday was triple the size!

There's no way I'm going swimming in that!

There’s no way I’m going swimming in that!

Even the smaller paddocks with the shelters were completely underwater.

It looks like a lake!

It looks like a lake!

There is no way my friends will be going into those paddocks today! I bet they’ll be happy to stay inside, though. And I’ll definitely be happy to have some company!

We walked along the pathway that led to the big paddock in the back – the one Leo went into after he escaped yesterday – and there was another huge lake! I really wanted to go out and splash around in it, but my Mommy held me back and told me it wasn’t a good idea.

Yep... it's another lake.

Yep… it’s another lake.

Actually, my Mommy reminded me about a time last summer when there was a big puddle in that back paddock. The puddle wasn’t nearly as big as this one, but it was knee-deep. Since it was very warm out, and the rest of that field wasn’t too wet or muddy, my Mommy and Aunt Nikki said that Leo and I could go splash around in the puddle.

Splashing around in the puddle last summer...

Splashing around in the puddle last summer…

Leo dared me to roll in the water, so I did… but I realized pretty quickly that the water was much colder than the air!

Oops... that was a BAD idea! That water was COLD!

Oops… that was a BAD idea! That water was COLD!

Yeah, we laughed about that for days afterward.

Anyway, my Mommy said that she is going to come back later tonight to check on me, and if it isn’t raining, we can probably go for another bareback walk. We’ll see, though… I have a feeling that it’s not going to happen. It’s supposed to be much colder tonight than it’s been – something like 30 degrees – so if it’s raining and it’s that cold, there’s no way my Mommy is going to let me go for a walk. I know her too well.

She may have a million rules, but I sure do love her.

She may have a million rules, but I sure do love her.

I hope you have a great day, friends. Try to stay dry, if at all possible! Catch y’all tomorrow!
