Yes, friends, you read that right: today was my first jumping day at my new barn. And you know what? It was amazing!
When I got down to the jumping arena, there were three other horses working out. One of them was Rocky, the pony who helped me to stay calm the day I first came to my new home for a trail ride, before I moved here to stay. Anyway, I walked right up to Rocky when I saw him in the arena, and he remembered me, too! We sniffed noses with each other and said hello; he seemed as happy to see me as I was to see him! Unfortunately, he and his Mommy – Lily – left the arena shortly thereafter, and I got a little nervous because I still hadn’t met the other two horses who were there. I’m sure they were nice, but they were with their humans in a jumping lesson, so I wasn’t able to walk up to them and introduce myself.
Mommy was very patient with me, though; she knew I was still a little nervous, so she helped me to keep my composure. And by that, I mean she gave me a treat from her Back Pocket Stash whenever I behaved exceptionally well! I think she wanted to show me that she knew how hard I was trying to be good, even while I was so nervous. And, to be honest, the treats really helped to calm me down. Treats always help to calm me down!
But my Mommy knows that the one thing which calms me down more than anything else in this world… is jumping! So she hopped me over a few warm up fences before she asked Daddy to start raising up some of the jumps.
I listened as intently as I could to everything my Mommy asked me to do; I collected when she asked me to, I extended when she asked me to, did a rollback here and a lead change there… And, just as I hoped, she and Daddy decided that I could jump a BIG jump, if only just a couple times!
It was a wonderful ride, and both Mommy and I got a great workout! I was exhausted from working so hard and jumping so high… and she was exhausted because, well… I’m just not all that easy to handle sometimes. Even though I was on my best behavior. But Mommy said she was very proud of me, again, for paying such close attention to her and doing my best to stay calm while I was still unsure of my surroundings. Daddy was very proud of me, too, and impressed at how well I did on my first jumping day in my new home!
Mommy and I walked around for a while, checking out the beautiful sights while we cooled down. We walked past the paddock where my two new friends were grazing; I couldn’t wait to get out there and eat some grass with them!
When we were finally completely cooled down, Mommy brought me to the cross ties to untack me and give me a shower. And, to my pleasant surprise, my friend Lily – Rocky’s little Mommy – came over and started helping! She even showered off my legs and my belly for me, before going into the feed room to grab some carrots for me, as a reward for being such a good boy.
Once I was showered, Mommy put on my splint boots and Daddy sprayed me with fly spray… and then I got to go out into the paddock to eat grass with my friends! We ran around a little bit and played, before finally settling in for some quality grazing time.
Of course, Mommy and Daddy had to come in and say goodbye one more time before they left for the night. And I didn’t mind at all!
I sure do love my new home. I love getting to graze all night under the stars, too. Sleeping under the stars is a wonderful thing, especially because I’ve never been in a home quite so beautiful, with so much space. It’s amazing to me how easily I can make friends when there are so many other horses around! I am starting to get used to this place; I hope that I can stay here a long, long time.
Goodnight, friends. I’ll catch y’all tomorrow…
