A race to beat the rain…?

This morning, my Mommy arrived early – only about an hour after I had breakfast – to ride me at the beginning of the day. She told me that the weather forecast called for rain in the late morning and early afternoon, so she wanted to make sure we got in a good workout before that happened. The skies were covered in clouds, so it seemed likely that the forecast would be correct. Since I jumped a little bit yesterday, we worked only on the flat today; we might get to jump again tomorrow, if the weather holds up… and, of course, if I behave myself!

That's my Mommy and me, working this morning on the flat.

That’s my Mommy and me, working this morning on the flat.

I like working in the mornings, especially on a day like today when the air is crisp and fresh, but not too cold. I have to admit, though, that it does get a little distracting when the other horses are all heading out to their paddocks to eat grass while I’m diligently working (like the good boy that I am).

Mommy and I warmed up at the walk, trot and canter, and then we worked on some lead change exercises. First, we worked in a “figure-8,” doing lead changes in the middle each time we changed directions. Then, she wanted me to work on doing lead changes into rollbacks, which I really love. In fact, I love it so much that I got a little carried away, and I started to anticipate the rollback before I’d even finished doing the lead change. So, needless to say, we had to start over a few times, but eventually I got it right. Then, we worked on something that I really dislike; can you guess what it is? I’ve ranted about it before… Okay, I’ll tell you: we worked on cantering on the wrong lead, and my Mommy wouldn’t let me do a lead change until I’d cantered around the arena twice on the wrong lead. Luckily for me, she only made me do that once before she let me be finished. She knows how much I hate it, so when I behave nicely and do the exercise perfectly, she doesn’t make me do it more.

Anyway, we had a great workout. After we were finished, my Mommy groomed me and then let me go out into the big, long field in the back with my best friend, Leo.

I love hanging out in the field with Leo!

I love hanging out in the field with Leo! I’m heading over to see what he’s up to.

It actually did start to “rain” when I got to the back field, but it only drizzled a little… and then it stopped, and it didn’t rain again all day! The clouds moved away and the sun came out for a little while… and then my Mommy told me that it’s supposed to rain tomorrow afternoon now, instead of today! Go figure, huh?

Either way, it was nice to work out in the morning, and I’m sure it will be a lot of fun to jump tomorrow morning, too. But for now, I’m going to go stand in the doorway of my stall and look really cute, see if maybe someone will bring me some more hay – or even better, a carrot. I’ll catch y’all tomorrow!

Have a good night, friends!
